Superdome Before and After

Google Maps Satellite View of New Orleans Superdome Before Hurricane Katrina and After

Checking out Google Maps to locate some neighborhoods where I had spent time in New Orleans. They have some post Katrina satellite photos up.

Much more detailed satellite photos showing the path of Hurrican Katrina can be found by going to Space Imaging and at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. From what I can tell, the ocean and atmosphere appear to be way beyond administration.

There is the ‘magnificent’ Trinity Episcopal Church on Jackson Ave. that I had called by spiritual, fellowship home for 12 years. Though I assume the structure did not have heavy damage from wind or flooding, it lays empty bereft of organ sounds, singing choirs, wedding vows, baptismal proclamations, school yard tittering and taunting.

From the tales of the ‘dust’ bowl, the 500 year drought visited upon Kansas, Oklamhoma and Nebraska during the height of the depression of the 1930’s, causing the migration of destitute farmers and shop keepers to a better life in California and Texas, came the inspiriation for the novel ‘Grapes of Wrath’ by John Steinbeck.

Is Katrina, the 500 year storm that obliterated New Orleans and Mississippi, and turned Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes into a ‘muck’ bowl forcing the migrations of 10s’ of thousands in abject poverty.

Is this America’s ‘Grapes of Wrath’ for the 21st century?
